Mobile. Friendly. Green. Accessible.

We’re your local bike shop
But different

Given that we are a pedal-powered mobile repair service, our services differ from what you’ll find at a standard brick & mortar bike shop.

Upshift Workshop is an entirely mobile workshop, traveling by cargo bike — we bring a bicycle workstand, all necessary tools, and standard spare parts. With just a flat patch of concrete or grass, we bring the bike shop to you. We can do straight-up repairs, but our favorite part of this work is teaching -- if you have any interest in learning a few home bike maintenance skills yourself, we are always happy to narrate while we work, or help guide you through trying it yourself if you book an education session.

Brick & mortar bike shops are pillars of our city’s bike community and infrastructure, but we think there is a space for something a little bit different. We are not aiming to compete with traditional repair shops — just to offer an parsed-down alternative, for a few types of customers who might not be well served elsewhere, but who still need to keep your bike rolling:

  • Busy schedules (or atypical work hours) that don’t line up well with traditional bike shops’ limited hours.

  • Eagerness to learn, and for a deeper education in bicycling topics than a typical shop has time to offer.

  • Discomfort in a typical bike shop environment, for reasons related to (for example) gender, race/ethnicity, age, experience level, or general customer service.

  • Difficulty transporting bikes to a shop (if it’s broken, you can’t ride it!).

We are happy to offer comprehensive bike repair and education house calls to your address, to avoid disruption to your workday (or however you spend your day!).

We offer holistic full-bike service, including:

  • Brake systems:  Assessing wear. All repairs + adjustments on cabled brake systems. Replacing brake calipers, pads, cables/housing, levers, calipers, and rotors.

  • Drivetrains:  Assessing wear. All repairs + adjustments. Replacing cables/housing, shifters, and derailleurs, chains, cassettes/cogs, cranks, and chain rings.

  • Wheels:  Assessing wear. Flat tire repairs & tire replacements. Truing, dishing, and aligning rims. Adjusting hubs, replacing spokes.

  • Bearing systems:  Assessing wear. Adjustments to loose-bearing headsets and bottom brackets. Replacing threaded bottom brackets.

  • Essential bike repair education:  At-home preventative maintenance classes. Custom hands-on mechanics lessons for commuters, bike tourers, and recreational riders. Bicycle basics workshops for youth and adults!

  • Consultations for city cycling and bike commutingRoute planning assistance for transportation and recreation, including City Cycling Skills lessons. Tailored private shopping assistance for bicycles, clothing, and gear. Basic bike fit adjustments.

What we do not currently offer:

(Subject to change as this business evolves. Until then, these are services where we may assess your bike for a workshop drop-off service, or referral to a brick & mortar bike shop) —

  • Overhaul-level tune-ups (we don’t want to cover your front lawn in grease!)

  • Hydraulic brake bleeds

  • Shock/suspension service

  • Wheel building

  • Tubular tire installs

  • Certified bike fitting services

  • Frame painting or frame repair.

In our opinion, what makes a better bike repair experience?

  • Empathy

  • Knowledge sharing

  • Explanations and education

  • Clear cost reasoning and breakdowns

  • Deep passion for bicycle transportation, that informs every business decision we make

  • At least 5% of profits to local social and environmental nonprofits.

  • Full price repairs help subsidize affordable repairs for others in need.
